Vanessa Kamp

Maps and plans come in many
different sizes, generally maps of cities or towns or even architectural plans
that orient us,
or point out where we are and lead us in to the right direction if "read"
correctly. This "reading" of sorts can lead to many
interpretations as to which way to go or in the case of Vanessa's "plan", what
we're looking at and what we believe we're
seeing. This rather anonymous folded up piece of what? plastic? a
dropcloth? garbage? hard to tell just by looking, but we
sense by its appearance and the tidiness of its presentation, that it served for
something unbeknownst to us. It is in all
respects a map or topographical plan, of Vanessa's studio apartment floor that
she stayed in this past summer while
attending an artist's internship in Spain. What you see is what you get as
they say, and in this case approximately 45
meters square of taped floorspace, band after band, roll after roll until the
entire surface had been "scotched". All this after
having intentionally done any dust mopping after three months of living, working
and breathing in the same space. The result?
an accurate portrait of a precise period of time, trapped like insects in a ball
of amber, of certainly someone's presence but
recording and preserving only the refuse and the superflu.
