Vanessa KAMP
December 10-14, 2003
"I move from
action-based work to material and process-based work. I move from the
immediacy of the street
to the methodical and meticulous work of lace making; moving from the public and
exposed to the very private
and secluded. I am interested in our physical and emotional internal
workings and their manifestations both as
personal autisms and as social currency. Disciplines such as sculpture,
dance, performance, athletics and
crafts act as historical references and frameworks for my investigations.
Just as my work often moves from object,
to action, to still photograph, to manipulated video, the physical engagement
with materials and processes are the
starting point".

100% Pure Pussy : The strongest imagery is in
the text. In the title : 100% Pure Pussy and in
the materials : handspun cat hair. A glance at
the small furry mound is visually bland; it is an
innocuous blob that is unremarkable. But add
the title and materials and it becomes a de-
scriptive mother lode. It confuses and mingles
associations of the feline, woman, the untainted,
and crude sexual slang. At once the blob is both
alluring and frumpy, it is both dowdy and seduc-
tive, both innocent and experienced. Without
text the form could only vaguely reference the
mons but with text, what else could it be? This
is the work of the feral spinster, wielder of virgin
magic, spinning and weaving base materials into
pure GOLD.
